Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You drop out of the tournament.

You call the coach and explain that you're not feeling well enough to compete and tell him to put the alternate on the team. Anything can happen. The alternate may surf a great run and put your team over the top. Or he may show his lack of tournament experience. In that case, people may blame you for not giving it your all.

"In terms of competing, [surfers] make decisions all the time," says surfer Maurice Muise. "Typically, they compete in heats and there are either two or four people in the water at one time. There are decisions to be made there, as to what kinds of waves you're going to choose and that sort of thing.

"From a business point of view, you would be making lots of decisions [about] the business -- what stock to carry and that sort of thing."
