Real-Life Math -- Solution

First, get your total:

$500 entry fee + $2,500 plane fare + $1,200 hotel and transportation + $800 food and other expenses = $5,000

Now subtract the $2,000 of your own money you already have.

$5,000 - $2,000 = $3,000

You need to ask each sponsor for $1,000 US.

How much will you have to ask each of the 2 Canadian sponsors for?

$1,000 x 1.25 = $1,250

You need to ask each of the 2 sponsors in Canada for approximately $1,250 Cdn.

According to Maurice Muise, a member of the International Surfing Association, math is not necessary while on the water. However, in a business setting, math is essential. "Certainly, if they're going to be starting any kind of a surf-related business, like surf clothing or surf equipment rental, it would be [necessary] in a basic bookkeeping sense," says Muise.
