Real-Life Math

Marine chemists use their expertise to analyze environments. But that analysis is only valid if the math is right.

Marine chemists often deal with ppm. That's parts per million. It is a standard for measuring the amount of an element in a liquid mixture.

Making that calculation is something marine chemists do every day.

Compute the parts per million for the following samples, using the information given.

A 200-liter sample of water from Hudson Bay shows 4 mL of mercury
A 2.5-liter sample of water from an Alaskan glacier contains 0.5 mL of sulphur dioxide
A 20-liter sample of Caribbean Sea water contains 2.5 mL of magnesium

Remember: a liter is 1,000 mL.
