Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You do a quick examination, then leave instructions to withdraw all treatment.

Despite the discontinued treatment, the patient continues to breathe and the heart continues to beat. This continues for a few more months. One day, to your amazement, the patient wakes up.

You are very sorry that you did not make the full and complete examination. Had you done that, your decision would have been very different. With continued treatment, the patient might have come out of the coma much sooner.

You resolve never to make that mistake again.

"What if I do a sloppy examination and this person isn't really brain dead, but I pronounce them brain dead?" says Dr. Karen Roos. "I might withdraw treatment from someone who might wake up."
