Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You stop the production process and test the solution again.

Some workers can't believe you're going to test again. You hear some disgruntled chatter when you go down to collect more samples for testing. Still, you think you're doing the right thing. After all, if there's a problem with the solution, you need to find out sooner, not later.

You take the samples back to the lab and re-test one. Much to your relief, the first test shows normal levels of acidity. So, you test the second sample just to be sure, and again you get good results.

This is the real-life decision made by Washington industrial chemist Penny Lao.

"It was a tense situation because we were so rushed for time," says Lao. "In my job, though, a little time spent in precaution will save everyone a lot of time making up for an error."
