Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You let the chemical workers continue on with the production.

In spite of your concern over the results of the first test, you can't bring yourself to halt production. You aren't sure if the acidity levels appeared too high because of a mistake you made in testing or because of an actual problem with the solution. You're so worried you hold your breath until production is completed.

When the production is done, you collect a sample of the solution to re-test. Fortunately, the product seems to be fine. Still, you're angry with yourself for taking such a big chance to save a little time.

"If there had been a problem, we would have been looking at a whole day of lost labor in the manufacturing process," says industrial chemist Penny Lao.

Lao says that laboratory work should always be redone if there's any doubt. "It's always better to err on the side of caution in this field."
