Recently, you've been hired to do testing and writing for a consumer magazine. In the past, you've always talked about vehicles with other engineers. Now, you've got to explain things to the public.

Stability control systems are becoming more readily available as a vehicle option and offer the potential for controlling a vehicle when its limits are exceeded. On a surface with a low friction coefficient or when tires exceed their traction limits, an oversteer or understeer condition may result. The stability control system compares signals monitoring the vehicle's lateral acceleration, yaw angle, wheel speed and steering wheel angle to determine a vehicle's position relative to its intended direction. The system then utilizes the anti-lock braking system to apply braking power appropriately so as to generate a counteracting torque to correct the vehicle path.

Definitions:

  • Vehicle limit: When the forces generated from a vehicle's movement exceed the traction limitations of the tires
  • Coefficient of friction: The ratio of the force required to move an object on a surface as compared to its load (weight) against that surface
  • Lateral acceleration: A means of measuring centrifugal type forces generated by a vehicle when traveling in a corner as measured perpendicular to the vehicle path
  • Yaw angle: The angular position of the vehicle as measured from an imaginary vertical axis passing through the center of the vehicle
  • Steering wheel angle: The angular orientation of the steering wheel from a straight-ahead position
  • Oversteer: When the rear of a vehicle slides out during a skid condition, creating a tighter turning path than intended by a given steer input
  • Understeer: When a vehicle continues on its intended path during a skid condition, creating a straighter path than intended by a given steering input
  • Torque: A force applied on a body at some distance from the axis that will tend to spin it about that axis
