Real-Life Math

Environmental engineers work in many different areas. But in each area, they must answer complicated math questions.

"Engineers use math every day," says Dan Degley, an environmental engineer.

"We use math frequently to do calculations such as drilling depths, and surveying areas," says Degley. "Engineering is all about making calculations."

You are studying air pollution. You have found that gasoline motors, diesel engines and railway operations give off 100 percent of the nitrous oxide in the air. Nitrous oxide is bad for the environment.

Diesel car engines account for 3 times more pollution than the railroad. But diesel car motors emit 20 percent less than gasoline motors. What percentage of nitrous oxide emissions come from each category: diesel car engines, gasoline engines and the railroad?
