Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You give the shot to somebody else.

You check up on your artist to see how her progress is going. You notice that she is struggling just as much as she was a few hours ago. It seems that she is not going anywhere with this shot.

"You have to make the hard decision," says Tom Bertino. "You take that shot away from them and give it to somebody else." Bertino adds that it doesn't mean the visual effects technician is a bad artist. The match is just not working out. "That's always a tough thing to do," he says. "You have to be delicate about it so that you don't hurt somebody's feelings."

You recognize that stress is still high. You must be as gentle as possible when breaking the news to her that she will no longer be working on this shot.

You finally break it to her that she and this shot are not a good match. As you are telling her this, you see relief and agreement spread through her face. You then give her a different assignment.

"Make them feel that you know they can do something else far better," says Bertino. "It's just a question of specialty."
