Real-Life Decision Making

You are the anesthesiologist for an 85-year-old woman who is about to have surgery. Just before the operation, you examine her quickly to ensure all will go well with the anesthesia.

When you look in the patient's mouth, you notice that one of her teeth is loose. It could very easily fall out during the surgery. A misplaced tooth could cause some real problems during surgery, since you're constantly working in the patient's mouth.

The woman is in a lot of pain, so you'll have to make a quick decision about how to handle this situation.

You could play it safe and postpone the surgery until the tooth can be removed. You could give the woman some medication to help her deal with the pain she's in.

Or you could try to work around the tooth and just be extra careful. If necessary, you could remove the tooth once the patient is anesthetized.

They're ready to prep the patient for surgery. What are you going to do?
