Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You decide to go ahead with the surgery.

You're going to have to do your best to avoid the loose tooth. You explain the situation to the patient, telling her you may have to remove the tooth once she is anesthetized, depending on how problematic it is. She agrees and signs a waiver that permits you to remove the tooth if necessary.

The surgery goes well, although you do end up taking the tooth out. Since you've been keeping an eye on it, you have no problem catching it before it causes any problems. The patient, of course, doesn't feel a thing.

This is the real-life decision made by anesthesiologist Dr. Theresa Walker.

"You really have to keep the patient in mind at all times," says Walker. "It would be really traumatic for this poor woman to have to pack up and go home, and then try to re-prepare herself for surgery again. The important thing was to get the surgery done."
