Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Here's what you could write:

Dear Mr. Davis,

In the past, you have made it clear that you don't want anything to do with Ned Ruxpin, the hot prospect from Jason Martin University. Before you make a final decision on this matter, please consider the following facts:

  • This past season, Ruxpin had a 0.347 batting average, with 43 home runs and 141 runs batted in. These numbers earned him the "Triple Crown." No one was near him on any of these three offensive categories.
  • In the field, young Ruxpin was equally as good. His 0.998 fielding percentage and Golden Glove Award stands as testament to his all-around ability. You can never have enough good fielding on a team.
  • Ruxpin stands over six feet tall, can run like the wind (100 meters in 12 seconds) and can play first base, third base, catcher and outfielder.

I certainly understand your concerns about Ruxpin's knee, shoulder and heart problems. Yet, based on his performance this season, I think we cannot pass up on him. Here is a kid who can hit, can run, can field and has the size to withstand the rigors of a full season with us. In my books, this kid is a winner. We would be foolish to pass him up.

Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter. Whatever decision you make, I will be behind you.

"Communication skills are very important to get a grip on as a scout," says sports scout Bryan Shumock. "While words are not everything in this kind of work, they certainly are one of the more crucial aspects. Without the ability to converse with young prospects and your bosses, you might as well give it up because it won't work."
