Real-Life Communication

Communication skills are key to a cruise director's job. "As cruise director, you're spokesperson for the vessel, as well as the chief problem solver," says cruise director David Van depas.

Cruise directors communicate with hundreds of people every day -- everyone from cooks, pursers and housekeeping staff to royalty traveling on the ship. Out of necessity then, their communication skills have to be excellent.

You've just received a message from the captain that a storm is passing through the area. In order to avoid the storm, the ship will have to stay put for a day or so, delaying the ship's arrival in the next port.

Prepare a speech for the passengers explaining the nature of the problem, without alarming people. Turn this setback into a new opportunity for activities, rather than a disappointment.
