Real-Life Math

Although it might not seem apparent, math is an important skill for cruise directors. "We always have to figure out how many people are going to what event," says cruise director Susan Halldimand. "And we have to use division when we're splitting people up into groups or passing out tickets."

You're the cruise director on a Mexican cruise. You've just given a talk to passengers about the next port coming up. After you finish, an elderly couple approaches you. They are on a strict budget and want to know how many pesos they'll be able to buy with $50 US.

If the rate of exchange is about 4.5 pesos to the American dollar, see how quickly you can figure out, in your head, how many pesos this couple can afford.
