One certainly needs to understand the basic statistical packages that come with computer systems for analysis," says archeologist Mima Kapches. So, math skills do play a part in the career of an archeologist, she says.

You are writing a report on an excavation site.

You want to estimate how many artifacts you will find. You decide to use a common method of doing this, based on sampling techniques. In sampling, you excavate a small area of the total dig area. Then, you use the data from the sample dig to calculate the number of artifacts you are likely to find in the dig as a whole.

The whole plot of land being excavated for your research is 10 square yards. If you have excavated 5 percent of this area and found 6.5 pounds of pottery, how big is your sample plot, and how much pottery can you estimate you'll find in total?
