You have diagnosed one of your patients as needing glasses. In order to explain the problem with her eyes, you must first explain how healthy eyes work. The patient is eight years old. Using the information below, explain some of the different parts of the eye in a way your young patient will be able to understand.

  • The cornea is a transparent tissue covering the outer part of your eye. It is a powerful refractive surface, allowing light rays to pass unimpeded onto the retina. The cornea also serves a dual purpose because it acts as a protective membrane, keeping dust and debris from entering the eye.

  • The lens of the eye is an almost transparent, oval-shaped structure suspended in the area behind the cornea. The lens refracts light entering the eye.

  • The retina is the innermost coat of the eye, covering the back two-thirds of the eyeball. Light is refracted through the lens and sent to the retina. If a retinal image could be caught on a screen, it would be inverted. The retina transforms the light energy it receives and changes it to electrical nerve impulses that are sent to the brain and turned right side up.
