Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Try putting it this way:

The cornea is like a skinny, clear glass window at the very front of your eye. It lets light come into your eyeball, but keeps all the other bad stuff, like dirt or dust, out of your eyeball.

The lens is also like clear glass, but it's oval-shaped and a very light yellow color. It sits behind the cornea and stays put there because little muscles hold it in place.

When light goes into your eye, the lens tells the light where to go inside your eyeball. It sends an upside-down picture of what you're looking at to your retina.

Your retina is the stuff that lines the back of your eyeball. It's shaped like a backward C. A picture comes through the lens and lands, upside-down, on your retina. It's the retina's job to send a message about this picture to your brain. When your brain gets the message, it will turn the picture right side up. That's when you "see" what's in front of you!

As an optometrist, you will be spending most of your day with patients. You have to be able to understand what they're saying when they describe an eye problem. Likewise, you have to make yourself understood when describing assessments and treatments.

"You have to be a good communicator," says Peter Rozanec, an optometrist. "A skilled practitioner requires technical skills and communication skills, someone who is able to listen and glean accurate information from patients."
