Your day-in-the-life story for the local paper might read something like this:

Bringing Jazz Down Under

Australia may be called the land Down Under, but for me it was a different world. Two weeks may not be enough time to see the entire country, but it is enough time to get to know the people and places that make it a happening place to play jazz.

One site I'll never forget is the Sydney Opera House. The huge dome structure was glowing with light and the sound of people milling around in anticipation filled the air. From onstage, the place was even more magnificent, with the city of Sydney and the sea spreading out as far as the eye could see. It was one of the most memorable concerts we've ever played.

To unwind, we took to the sandy beaches. We soaked up some sun and splashed in the warm waters, but we didn't wade in too deep. We stayed about ankle depth and watched the fins of great white sharks circle around in the water. Even on dry land it was a scary sight.

Equally awesome was the Australian outback, which we drove across in a bus. The driver said we had to keep moving or the wheels on the bus would melt! Kangaroos hopped past and our guide gave us strict warnings to watch out for snakes and scorpions.

In fact, our guide might have been the highlight of the entire trip. Tall and muscular, he was as gentle as a koala bear and made us feel right at home from the time we stepped off the plane. With his help, our visit Down Under was one to remember.
