Real-Life Math -- Solution

First you need to figure out what the total needs for the order are.

  • 250 dresses x 2 yards per dress = 500 yards of silk
  • 250 dresses x 4 white buttons each = 1,000 buttons
  • 250 dresses x 2 black buttons each = 500 buttons
  • 250 dresses x 1 zipper per dress = 250 zippers

Because you're in a hurry, the best solution is to divide all your needs by 5 and see if you can get it all that way. That would give you:

  • 500 / 5 = 100 yards of silk per person
  • 1,000 buttons / 5 = 200 white buttons per person
  • 500 black buttons / 5 = 100 buttons per person
  • 250 zippers / 5 = 50 zippers each

Yes. Each supply house should have enough materials. You pass out the shopping lists and hit the streets.

Though the math skills needed in the industry are basic, they're important for the business end of things. Katherine Cleaver, a professor, says, "Anyone who can keep track of the financial aspects of their business is better off than someone who concentrates on the creative aspect but doesn't really know if they are losing money or not."
