Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You keep quiet and let him continue with the presentation.

Higgins finishes the presentation and the crowd applauds. It is a standing ovation. The owner sees you out of the corner of his eye and pulls you toward the podium. He thanks Higgins and you for a job well done. He announces that the construction of the new ultra high temperature pasteurization plant will begin immediately. The owner offers you a job as a quality controller for the pasteurization plant, but you decline.

Months go by and you are working on another consulting contract. You pick up the newspaper during your lunch break and are in shock at what you read. The dairy company you once worked for is now out of business. As it turns out, nobody liked the taste of the milk once it had gone through the UHT process. The company took a big loan from the banks to build the new dairy processing UHT pasteurization plant. It could not keep up with the payments due to the low sales of the product. The bank foreclosed on the company. Over 500 people are out of work.

"If an [agricultural educator's] research uncovers a negative consequence to a particular processing operation being used by the food agency, it is incumbent on the professional to disclose those results, but to do so in a fair manner," says John Vanderstoep.
