Real-Life Communication

Learning to read and understand stock quotations is a basic skill that stockbrokers must have.

Brian Paragamian is a former stockbroker who now teaches people, via his website, how to trade stocks. He says stockbrokers must be excellent communicators.

"If you do things the right way, and you're honest, and you communicate with them (your clients) the right way, you don't have burnout and you don't have clients that get mad at you," says Paragamian.

Following is an example of a listed stock quotation:

(1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9)
HighLowStockDiv.HighLowCloseChangeVolume
149 1/4JAD.5010 1/210 1/410 1/2+1/25,000

This quotation shows:

  • the stock traded as high as $14 per share during the past 52 weeks to date
  • the stock traded as low as $9.25 per share during the past 52 weeks to date
  • the symbol of the stock
  • the indicated dividend rate on this stock over the last 12-month period is $0.50. A dividend is the distribution of assets generated by earnings to owners of a corporation; it may be paid in cash, with shares, with property or with other securities.
  • the stock traded as high as $10.50 during the day or week under review
  • the stock traded as low as $10.25 during the day or week under review
  • the last trade of the day took place at $10.50
  • the closing trade price was $0.50 higher than the previous closing price
  • a total of 5,000 shares traded during the day or week under review

Now it's your turn to give it a try. Here are the stock quotations for two companies. Look at the quotations, and then try to answer these questions:

  1. Which one had the highest dividend?
  2. What was the lowest priced share during the last year?
  3. What was the highest-priced share during the last week or during the day?
  4. Which stock had the biggest change in closing prices?

"Peach" is the top stock; "Alert" is the stock at the bottom of the chart.
