Real-Life Math

You are a casting director for a film company, and are currently casting extras for a comic scene. From the crowd of actors, you select 4 people that you want dressed in 2 separate horse costumes. You also select 25 more people to saddle up and mount real horses for the scene.

You cast a bartender for the saloon and 3 circus performers to juggle, eat fire and swing on a trapeze.

"You select all the people you want to make a scene work just as you want, but you've got to think about the cost of what you are doing," says Christopher Gaze, a director and producer.

"If you cast 2 people to dress up as a horse, you also have to think about how much it will cost to pay them and how much to get the suit."

You pay each extra $110 for the day, except for the circus performers, who you will pay 25 percent more because their work is more dangerous and they are supplying their own costumes and equipment.

The horse costumes will cost $75 each, and it will cost $80 per day to rent each real horse and the equipment needed. The bartending outfit will cost $30 per day to rent.

How much will it cost you for the day to get the cast hired and ready for filming?
