Real-Life Communication -- Solution

You're a physician assistant working during the flu season. You've seen a number of people with common colds and the flu. Something about Amy's condition makes you think her illness is something more serious. This is what you find:

  1. Name three conditions Amy has that make you think she may have meningitis.

You think that Amy may have meningitis for a number of reasons: her illness came quickly. She had a severe headache. The adults in the house weren't affected. She has a stiff neck. She vomited and she is currently feeling lethargic. It is also the season for meningitis outbreaks.

  2. Even though Amy hasn't been around kids today, what makes you think she could have come in contact with someone who has meningitis?

Amy went to a day care four days ago, the typical time period for the incubation of meningitis.

Strong communication skills are "essential" for PAs, says Ian Jones. He's a former practicing PA and now director of the Physician Assistant Education Program at the University of Manitoba.

"The job is talking -- sorry, the job is listening," Jones corrects himself with a laugh. "My job is talking (as a professor), but the job of PAs is to listen."
