Real-Life Math -- Solution

Insurance payments are a large part of the math that PTAs figure out. It can be a real headache.

But as PTA Teresa Gilley says, "I think anything you do that helps someone return to what they want to do or love is important."

The correct billing for Mr. Sprain is as follows:

8 (weeks) x 4.5 hours (per week) = 36 hours total for 8 weeks
The last 4 weeks x 1.5 hours (per week) = 6 hours total over the last 4 weeks

Total = 42 hours
Total cost (without hydrotherapy) = $150 x 42 = $6,300

Hydrotherapy

Figure out how much each 15-minute increment of therapy costs:

$150 / 4 = $37.50
$37.50 x 3 (three 15-minute increments) = $112.50

$6,300 + $112.50 = $6,412.50 is the total cost for treatment.

Mr. Sprain must pay:

$250 (deductible) + $500 (50 percent up to $1,000) = $750

The insurance company must pay:

$500 (for the first $1,000) - $250 (deductible received from Mr. Sprain) + $5,412.50 (100 percent after $1,000) = $5,662.50
