Real-Life Decision Making

All doctors face difficult decisions when it comes to patient care. Even with modern diagnostic equipment, knowing the right course of action isn't easy.

It can be especially trying for pediatricians, who often have to make diagnoses without the input of their patients. The patients may be too young to talk. Or they may not yet have a good enough understanding of their bodies to be able to explain their symptoms.

You are a pediatrician. Your current patient is a six-year-old boy who has complained to his mother about stomach problems for several weeks.

You sit him down and try to get him to talk to you about the pain. He only says, over and over, that it hurts bad. When you try to get him to pinpoint the location, he only points to his stomach.

You consider ordering an extensive battery of costly tests, including an MRI and other internal X-rays. But the patient, upon hearing this, suddenly says he feels better. He claims he had simply wanted to avoid going to school for a few days.

What do you do?
