Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You order the tests anyway.

This is what doctors would consider playing it safe. It's not a bad option. But in the age of strictly managed medicine, costly tests are discouraged by insurers and, in some cases, by the government, except as a last resort.

And what if the child is telling the truth? You would have subjected him to hours of tests, some with potential health risks -- such as X-rays -- for nothing.

Pediatricians face lots of difficult decisions but those involving children who change their minds are very hard to deal with.

"That's where you really have to be careful and where knowing your child is important," says Dr. John Moore. "Knowing my patients is important, and putting that together with my knowledge about disease states."
