Real-Life Math -- Solution

Here's what you find:

PatientNormalDifferencePercent
Heart rate55 bpm48 bpm55 - 48 = 77 / 48 x 100 = 14.5
Blood pressure140120140 - 120 = 2020 / 120 x 100 = 16
Temperature99.998.699.9 - 98.6 = 1.31.3 / 98.6 x 100 = 1.3
Pupil dilation3 mm5 mm5 - 3 = 2 mm2 / 5 x 100 = 40

A close call. Only 2 of the 4 tests are above the threshold of 15 percent. However, the heart rate is so close that you may choose to go ahead and order the tests.

"Basic arithmetic and calculus are important to get to medical school, but I don't use them too much in my daily life," says pediatrician John Moore. "Statistics, on the other hand, helps me to make sense out of all the data in the world. So, when I see a study, some studies are relevant and some of them are not, some are well constructed and some are not.

"Being able to review the medical literature with a critical eye and know what's important to my patients, and know what's valid, I use on a daily basis," adds Dr. Moore. "So, basic math I don't use too much, but statistics is very important."
