Real-Life Decision Making

You're a welder at the shipyards. Even though you've almost finished a job on a liner that needed repairs, you are behind schedule. The customer came in today and demanded that the project be finished right away. If the job isn't done, he has threatened to take his business elsewhere.

To finish the job, you'll have to hoist a sheet of metal across the floor and over to the boat. The metal weighs close to two tons, and you will be lifting it over the heads of several workers.

You've got a lifting lug (a U-shaped piece where a hook can be placed) already welded on to the sheet of metal. The lug just meets the minimum safety standard for lifting two tons. That means the lug will hold two tons. However, you usually like to use a lug that's well over the safety standard.

You don't have a stronger lifting lug at the shop. You could construct and weld a new lug on to the sheet of metal, but that would take time. You think of the angry customer who is ready to take his business elsewhere if you don't get the project completed today.

What are you going to do?
