The owner of a clothing store shows you around her newly renovated boutique. She wants you to build a decorative railing on the staircase up to the second floor of her shop.

She wants a round, industrial-looking railing. You tell her that you can make the railing, but because she wants it to be unique, you will have to weld the tube yourself.

You pull out your measuring tape to begin your work.

Part A

You jot down a few measurements at the store:

The staircase is 5 feet from the base of the stair to the back wall. This is called the run. It is also 5 feet from the back wall straight up to the top of the stairs. This is called the rise.

Using the measurements for the rise and run of the staircase, figure out the length of the flight of stairs, so that you know how long to make the railing. This is the equation you will need to use:

rise2 + run2 = length2

Part B

Back at your shop, you have to figure out how to make a round railing from a flat piece of metal. This will involve bending your flat piece into a cylinder.

If you want the radius of the final circular railing to be 1.2 inches, how wide does your flat piece of metal have to be?

This is the equation you will use:

circumference = 2 x pi x r, where pi = 3.14
