Real-Life Math -- Solution

Part A

So how long will the railing be?

length2 = rise2 + run2
length2 = 5 ft2 + 5 ft2
length2 = 25 + 25
length2 = 50
length = 7.07

The length of the stairs is 7.07 feet. That means you will have to cut a railing that is 7.07 feet long.

Part B

Now, figure out how wide the railing will be.

circumference (width of the flat piece of metal) = 2 x pi x r, where pi = 3.14
circumference = 2 x 3.14 x 1.2 inches
circumference = 6.28 x 1.2
circumference = 7.54

The circumference is 7.54 inches, so the flat piece of metal will have to be 7.54 inches wide.

There are several ways welders use math regularly, including to determine how to weld something.

"Nowadays, a welder doesn't just sit down and weld," says Kim Buchan. He's the coordinator of a welding program. "They're doing fabricating too, so there's math and geometry, figuring out areas and angles.

"Your math skills are pretty general math skills," Buchan adds. "Some adding and dividing, how to work with fractions, how to work with both the imperial measurements and the metric measurements, a little multiplication and division, percentages, and a little bit of geometry."
