Real-Life Math

Casino dealers are constantly using math to add card totals, to roll the dice, to add wagers and to calculate payouts.

"Casino dealers use math all the time," says Ryan Savelieff, a casino dealer. "During payouts, dealers have to make quick mental calculations, often involving very high numbers."

A man sits at your roulette table and flips chips down onto the board. He has 25 white chips, 10 red chips, 15 green chips and 5 blue chips. The roulette wheel cranks and spins and finally stops on his number. He jumps up and down, ecstatic that he won.

As a casino dealer, you have to figure out how much to pay out. If he doubled his money, how much did he win?

Blue chips are worth $1
Green chips are worth $2
Red chips are worth $0.50
White chips are worth $5
