Real-Life Communication -- Solution

You are a casino dealer explaining the game of blackjack to potential players in your area. This is what you tell them:

  1. Why is it OK for other players to see the cards in your hand?

In blackjack, you play directly against the dealer, not against other players. That means it doesn't matter if they see your cards.

  2. How do you know what value the ace has?

The ace can be either one or 11. It will automatically be counted as whatever value makes the best hand. If you have an ace and a three, the ace would count as 11, giving you a total of 14. If you take another card and get a 10, the ace would count as one, because otherwise you would bust.

  3. What's the difference between a "soft" and a "hard" hand?

This all depends on having an ace. If you have an ace and it can be counted as either one or 11 without going over 21, you have a "soft" hand. If your ace must be counted a certain way to avoid busting, you have a "hard" hand.
