Real-Life Communication -- Solution

You telephone the woman, who picks up the receiver on the first ring. Here is what you say to her:

First off, I want to let you know that you do not have cancer. You have a condition that is called "mild dysplasia." Cells that are displasic have an appearance that is different from normal cells. But dysplasia is not cancer.

There are different levels of dysplasia, depending on how abnormal the cells look. The type you have, mild dysplasia, is the least severe form.

You should still see your doctor. I don't want to alarm you, but if your condition isn't treated, the cells might become more and more abnormal. You might develop moderate or even severe dysplasia.

That's the whole purpose of the Pap smear -- to treat abnormalities before they become serious. That's why it's very important that you see your family physician. I can't say for certain what treatment he will recommend. He may want to schedule another Pap smear in a few months. But if you seek treatment now, you shouldn't have anything to worry about in the long run.

In addition to verbal communication skills, cytotechnologists need to be able to express themselves clearly with paper and pen.

"We write descriptive diagnoses of microscopic findings on every case we screen," says Walsh. "Clinicians need to understand our diagnoses in order to treat their patients correctly. Many of our patients have cancer, and it is very important that they receive the right diagnosis and the right treatment."
