Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You say nothing.

You ask a few co-workers to examine the slide. They agree that it could be bladder cancer. Still, you decide that you must be mistaken and say nothing.

You don't hear anything more about the patient's case. However, you can't get it out of your mind. Over the next few months, you examine hundreds of slides. As you gain more experience, you realize that you probably were correct. The abnormal cells may have been caused by bladder cancer.

You feel guilty about keeping silent. You can only wonder how the patient felt when he was finally diagnosed correctly.

"Inexperience often leads to a slight lack of self-confidence," says cytotechnologist Beth Gardino Walsh. "But we run into differential diagnosis problems almost every day."
