Real-Life Math -- Solution

First, you need to figure out the width of the field of vision.

22 (FIN of eyepiece) / 10 (magnification of objective lens) = 2.2

The hypotenuse of your imaginary triangle is 2.2 mm.

Now you can use the Pythagorean theorem to solve the problem. Remember that A and B are equal, since all the sides are equal.

A2 + A2 = C2
2A2 = C2
A2 = C2 / 2
A = square root of (C2 / 2)
A = square root of (2.22 / 2)
A = square root of (4.84 / 2)
A = square root of 2.42
A = 1.56 mm

You will need to move the slide 1.56 mm every time you want to view a new section of the specimen.

"Basic math skills such as addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication are important in the laboratory," says cytotechnologist Beth Gardino Walsh. "We calculate daily workload [the number of slides screened]; we measure reagents that are used to prepare specimens; and we render cell counts on certain types of specimens."
