Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are a university president organizing a fund-raising dinner to earn money to do renovations on the school library. You calculate how much you could earn from the dinner:

Costs = hall rental + catering + guest speaker's fee
Costs = $3,000 + $6,000 + $2,500
Costs = $11,500

143 individual tickets at a cost of $150 each:

143 x $150 = $21,450

240 couples' tickets (that is, tickets for 480 people) at a cost of $275 for 2 tickets:

240 x $275 = $66,000

50 tables of 10 at a cost of $1,000:

50 x $1,000 = $50,000

Total ticket sales = $21,450 + $66,000 + $50,000
Total ticket sales = $137,450

Sales minus costs = $137,450 - $11,500
Sales minus costs = $125,950

You will make a profit of $125,950 on the dinner. This won't be enough to complete the renovations, but it's a good start.
