Real-Life Decision Making

You are a cardiovascular technician. You are doing echocardiograms for patients with suspected heart conditions. An echocardiogram uses sound waves to look at the function of the heart.

The echocardiography department is extremely busy at your hospital. Near the end of the day, you are asked to schedule two echocardiograms. However, you know that you will only have the space and time to perform one.

By looking over the case history of the two patients, you have to decide which you will see today, and which patient will have to wait until tomorrow.

Mary is a frail, elderly patient. Her continued fatigue and weakness is probably due to a known heart condition. The doctor wants to re-examine her heart to make sure.

Tom, a man in his early 50s, has complained of minor chest pains. Tom seems in good condition. However, his doctor has noted that an infection may be spreading in his chest.

What do you do?
