Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You put Mary on the machine.

Because Mary is frail and elderly with a known heart condition, you feel that it is important that she get access to the machine to find out if there is damage in her heart.

Tom is young and only complaining of minor heart pains, so you think he can wait until tomorrow.

The doctor disagrees. There are two reasons Tom may have been a better choice. Mary has a known heart condition, which means that she has already been diagnosed once.

The second reason that Tom should be chosen first is because he has an infection. This condition could quickly get out of control, and the doctor needs to know as soon as possible how it is affecting his heart.

"If someone has an infection or something like that, they get a higher priority," says Chandra Varey of the Cardiac Echo Lab. "You get to know what type of cases must get through right away."
