Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You put Tom on the machine.

This is the real-life decision that Chandra Varey says would be made at the Cardiac Echo Lab.

"Prioritizing has to be done at the lab," says Varey. "Often, there isn't enough room to give everyone the exam."

In these cases, the cardiovascular technician must decide which patient has a greater need. "We figure out who is more of a priority, and who can wait until the next day," says Varey.

If the decision is difficult, the technicians can consult the doctor. "Technicians have to make decisions up to a point, and then a doctor comes in and looks over the reports and decides what needs to be done."
