Real-Life Communication

Locksmiting is not all technical work. Good communication skills are a must.

"I'm a real people person, so I love meeting with different customers and doing lots of different jobs," says locksmith Kelly Baily.

Just like any other technical type of work, locksmithing has its own particular lingo. See how many of these terms you can match up to the definitions:

1. BowA. The part of the key that is inserted into the lock.
2. PlugB. A key before any cuts have been made, or a key that is not fully cut and is thus not yet operational.
3.KeywayC. The handle of the key.
4.ShellD. The part of the plug where you insert the key.
5. BlankE. The part of the lock that you put the key into, and which turns to operate the lock.
6.ShoulderF. The outer part of the lock that surrounds the plug.
7. BladeG. The edge of the key that touches the face of the lock to define how far the key is inserted into the lock.
8. WardH. Protrusions that stick out of the sides of the keyway to allow the entry of only the correct type of key blank.
