School counselors work with students in personal counseling, academic counseling, career counseling and social development. As part of their academic counseling function, a school counselor analyzes grades. They might need to see if a student is working to the potential, or they might want to find out if a student has the grades they'll need to meet their goals.

"Math is certainly used for counselors in academic assessments. We're looking to determine a student's strengths and weaknesses and make decisions based on probability," says June Sanderson. She is a counseling specialist.

As a school counselor, you meet with students who are preparing to enter college. Mary is the next student you are going to meet. She is applying to a college that requires a 60 percent average for admission. She has the results of her first seven exams and she's scored an average of 56 percent. She is preparing for her eighth exam which she will write next week.

What does she need to score on her eighth exam to make an average of 60 percent on all eight exams?
