Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You give him information about medical school.

You know what Paul's parents want for him, so you tell him to study hard and give him the low-down on med school.

You provide him with schools he can go to for his pre-med studies and a list of medical schools. You mention that most medical schools require a strong score on an admission test. You explain to him that medical school is a significant financial investment. You tell him about residency requirements after medical school before he'll be able to become a doctor.

"You make sure they understand the years of study necessary and the rigour associated with the program," says June Sanderson. She is a counseling specialist.

When Paul leaves your office, you know you've covered all the bases about what's necessary to become a doctor. But you are left wondering if you've done what's best for Paul or just what Paul's parents wanted. School counselors need to think of students' needs first and be true advocates for their students.
