Real-Life Math -- Solution

You’re preparing to meet with Mary, a student taking final exams. She needs some practical advice about how to boost her exam average from 56 to 60 percent with seven exams down and one to go.

Let x = the mark on the eighth exam:

56 % = .56

(.56 x 7 + x) /8 = .60

3.92 + x = .60 x 8

3.92 + x = 4.80

x = 4.80-3.92

x = .88

She will need to have a mark of 88 percent on her next exam.

“Skills you learn in math class will come into play in terms of problem-solving and reasoning,” says Eric Sparks. He is a school counselor and president of the American School Counselor Association.
