Dude Ranch Operator

Real-Life Activities

Real-Life Math

You are the owner and operator of Kissing Cousins Dude Ranch. With only a month and a half until your opening day, you think it would be a good idea to tend to your horses, who will figure big in your ranch's activities during peak season. All they really need, you reckon, are fresh supplies. You hop into your truck and drive into town for a bit of a shopping spree.

At the top of your list is horse food and a certain horse vitamin supplement called Big OK Vit-a-mins. You end up at Jed Beauregard's Beast Emporium, where you find both Gumm's Horse Vittles and Big OK Vit-a-mins. Just by luck, old Jed's having a sale on all animal food, vitamins and grooming supplies.

Here are the prices that have your interest:

Your job is to figure out how much each item costs per measure. So, for the Vittles, divide the sale price into the number of pounds.

Item No. 564 (5 lb.) would be:
$11 / 5 = $2.20 per pound

For the Vit-a-mins, divide the sale price into the number of capsules.

Item No. 200 would be:
$15 / 60 = 0.25 (25 cents per capsule)

"Any dude rancher needs to have math skills," say Greg and Pixie Carrier, Colorado dude ranchers. "In the abstract, we use geometry and, in the practical, use math to balance the books and determine how much our animals are going to need."

What is the best price-per-measure of both the Vittles and the Vit-a-mins?
