As a sonographer, you often hear about danger and risks. Jodi Hutchinson is a patient of yours. She is 35 years old and pregnant.

When she comes in for her appointment she tells you that she is concerned about having a baby with Down syndrome.

Here is the statistic:

  • A 35-year-old woman with otherwise normal fetal test results has approximately a 1 in 400 chance of having a baby with Down syndrome

A 1 in 400 chance can sound scary. Some doctors choose to present the risk factors to patients as a percentage chance of not having a baby with Down syndrome.

"Math is necessary in order to understand all parts of the job," says sonographer Joan Baker. "You need to understand everything from logarithmic curves to decibel notation to straight calculations."

What is the chance (as a percentage) that Jodi will deliver a baby without Down syndrome?
