Real-Life Math -- Solution

You need to determine whether Billy is ready to hit the road. For every error that he made during his road test, you'll need to deduct points from the total 125 score. So first, add up all his demerit points.

Failure to check blind spot while changing lanes: -2.5 (points) x 2 = -5.0
Sloppy parallel parking technique: -4.0
Excessive speed: -2.5 x 6 = -15.0
Failure to perform circle-check before stepping into car: -2.5

Total demerit points: 5.0 + 4.0 +15.0 + 2.5 = -26.5

Next, subtract the demerit points from the total score:

125 (perfect score) - 26.5 (points) = 98.5

Next divide the remaining points by the total score to get a percentage:

98.5 / 125 = 79%

To pass the test, Billy needs 75 percent. With an overall score of 79 percent, he has passed the test!
