Real-Life Decision Making

You are an equine (horse) veterinarian. You have been called to a racetrack, where a horse has broken her leg. It's a serious injury, but often the horse can be saved.

You sedate the horse and take her to the equine hospital, where you set to work on her leg. After six hours on the operating table, with some moderate complications, you set the horse's broken leg in a cast. All you can do now is wait for the anesthetic to wear off.

A few hours later, the horse wakes up. She panics, breaks off her cast and hurts her leg even more. She is now suffering terribly.

A decision must be made immediately. You will either have to put this horse down and end her misery or try the operation again to extend her life. Since the owner of the horse is nowhere to be found, the decision is in your hands. What do you do?
