You recommend that they add more seats to the plane.

When you create your computer model, it is obvious that more people will fly on the airline if they offer the cheapest prices.

You are happy when you calculate how many extra dollars you can bring in by adding the seats to every flight, every day. It adds up quickly.

However, after an initial rush of customers, Skylark notices a sharp drop in sales. People find the seats too uncomfortable. "There are only so many seats that can go on a plane," says Ross Darrow. He is an operations research analyst. "This is the economics of scarce resources. We use math to best figure out how to allocate seats and maximize profits. There are limits."
