Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You recommend that they find another way to reduce fares.

This is the real-life decision of Ross Darrow. He is an operations research analyst in Texas. "You are trying to maximize profit, but this is subject to some constraints -- and limits are provided," he says.

People need a certain amount of room to feel comfortable on a flight. If they are uncomfortable, they will most likely pay a bit more to fly on another airline. Safety is also an issue.

"We are the science behind making decisions," says Darrow. "We answer questions on capacity allocation. We make computer models for routing issues and schedule the crews."

Increasing profit is the goal, but the safety or satisfaction of the customer shouldn't be negatively affected by these decisions.
