Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

Ignore the complaint

You are a property manager for an office building. You are responsible for the facilities and common areas of the building, including the cafeteria. You've received a complaint that the soup in the cafeteria is dangerously hot.

You decide to ignore the complaint. Just a couple weeks ago someone else complained that it was not hot enough. You increased the temperature to satisfy them. You figure that you can't please everyone.

A few weeks later there is an accident in the cafeteria. Someone carrying a container full of hot soup tripped, and the soup spilled and scalded a bystander. Luckily the bystander was not badly burned.

Your supervisor takes this incident very seriously. He reminds you of a lawsuit against McDonald's in 1994. A woman was burned by hot coffee and received a damage award of $480,000 from the company. Your department is responsible for safety in the building. All safety complaints should be taken seriously.

Kristy Ludwar is an on-site property administrator at a large office building. She says resolving complaints like this can be as easy as posting a sign, warning customers that the soup is very hot.
